The movement has yet to have a measurable impact on healthcare, but graduates of DNP programs are expected help fill the void of nursing shortages nationwide by developing new and innovative clinical nursing roles, as well as by filling vacancies in teaching and administration of patient care services.

The PhD in Nursing is designed for Master's prepared nurses who aspire to research and academic roles within healthcare and educational settings. This full time, cohort-based program is offered on-site. All application to the School of Nursing programs are electronic and must be submitted online by published deadlines. Interviews may be required of qualified applicants. Qualified applicants are expected to meet all academic admission criteria, as well as these technical standards, appropriate to their program of study. Review of technical standards is essential for all applicants and continuing students in the Stony Brook University School of Nursing. Students are encouraged to ask questions about or clarify the Technical Standards for Admission and Retention and make a determination as to whether you can meet the requirements with our without reasonable accommodation.

A maximum of six 6 non-clinical credits may be earned prior to matriculation. Non-matriculated study does not guarantee admission to the School of Nursing.
Each student is assigned a faculty advisor for the duration of their enrollment in the School. Students are responsible to communicate with their advisor at least once each semester.
All undergraduate students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2. Enrollment of all matriculated students requires registration for coursework in all semesters, unless a leave of absence has been granted or upon prior advisement from faculty. Students in all programs on a leave of absence will not have access to Stony Brook email, the curriculum, faculty support, and technical support.
Students in the Master of Science and Advanced Certificate programs who were admitted prior to Summer are expected to follow the minimum grade policy in effect at the time of their admission. Please contact your Program Director if you have questions or require additional information.
Final course grades and individual assignments within courses exams, projects, etc. See the Health Sciences Center Bulletin for grading system for courses taken in other departments. Please note, the original grades will remain on the transcript. After academic renewal, undergraduate students must earn 55 credits in residence to be considered for degrees with distinction. Students must inform their faculty of record of the withdrawal and meet with their Program Director for a revised program pathway.
If approved, the petition will be filed with the Office of Student Affairs for processing. Non-attendance in a course, difficulty of course material, volume of work, or academic performance in the course as factors by themselves are not considered sufficient reasons to request a withdrawal.
The criteria for students to maintain enrollment in good standing in the School of Nursing are satisfactory performance in all academic and clinical components of the program.
Failure to meet standards for academic progression may result in an academic sanction. Academic Warning is utilized to notify students of unsatisfactory performance in any course at any time, for the following reasons:.
Faculty recommendations, in writing, are developed to assist students to meet individual learning needs and course objectives. Failure to comply with faculty recommendations will result in further actions jeopardy, deceleration, dismissal.
Jeopardy status is defined as a cumulative GPA of less than 2. The Clinical Practice Portfolio is only required for those Registered Nurse applicants with a non-nursing bachelor's degree who have been offered conditional acceptance. The office works collaboratively with faculty to secure clinical placement sites for students. Once a suitable site is identified, students submit a clinical placement request form for processing.
