The Challenge of Democracy is an excellent summary of American government in the 21st century. It manages to remain mostly in the middle of the aisle, without the political opinions of the authors interfering with the content.
It also provides supplemental information surrounding other countries, and offers many statistical comparisons between the United States and the rest of the world.
